What Is R-22 Refrigerant?
R-22 refrigerant was a commonly used refrigerant in air conditioning systems that predated 2010. The EPA instated a gradual phase-out of R-22, which ends in January 2020 with a complete cease on all importing and production of the refrigerant.
Why Is R-22 Being Phased Out?
R-22 refrigerant was found to be harmful to the ozone layer when released into the atmosphere, and so the EPA, in addition to the phase-out, required that all air conditioning systems manufactured after 2010 utilize a more environmentally friendly refrigerant known as R-410A.
How Can It Affect Massachusetts Homeowners?
Homeowners who rely on air conditioning systems that still use R-22 refrigerant will notice that the costs to recharge their equipment with R-22 will increase as the phase-out draws closer to the end date. Once the phase-out is complete, those costs can be expected to increase further due to limited supply of the refrigerant.
What Should These Homeowners Do?
The good news is that homeowners don’t have to tolerate these price increases! Simply upgrading the air conditioning equipment will be enough to avoid paying more for refrigerant charges.
